Wednesday, January 13, 2021 • Gating Criteria Decision for Learning Mode Weeks of January 19-29

The Gating Criteria Committee met this afternoon to determine modes of learning for the weeks of January 19-29. Derby Public Schools is yellow on the gating criteria chart. Early Childhood-12th grade will remain in-person during this period. (View Gating Criteria Considerations chart HERE and Safety/Logistics Plan HERE.) Note: Those who selected remote as their 9-week enrollment option will remain remote.

Monday, January 4, 2021 • 9-Week Learning Model Preference Request Form - Requests Must be Completed by January 11

Derby Public Schools shared prior to the start of school that families may elect to switch learning models each 9-weeks if desired. As Derby Public Schools moves forward to the 3rd quarter beginning on January 26, we are planning for changes that might be needed to adjust for students who would like to switch between in-person instruction and remote instruction. In order to request a change between in-person and remote instruction, parents will be asked to complete the change request form (linked below by school level) that opens on January 4 by the end of the day January 11, 2021.

Elementary
Middle School
High School


This information is needed by January 11 to allow enough time for students’ schedules and teaching staff to be adjusted in time for the first day of instruction for 3rd quarter January 26, 2021. If you do NOT want a change to your student's mode of instruction, it is not necessary to complete a form.

A few important notes about changes:
• The gating criteria (located HERE) will be reviewed every two weeks and will be used to determine modes of learning.
• We will do our best to balance requests for change with the need to keep teacher assignments and student groups as consistent as possible.
• Your student’s remote teacher may remain remote which means that if your child returns in-person they may (or may not) receive a new teacher and a new group of classmates.
• As students' preferred mode of instruction changes, your child’s teacher assignment may change and your student’s in-person (or remote) teacher and classroom assignment may change.


Wednesday, December 30, 2020 • Gating Criteria Decision for Learning Mode Weeks of January 4-15
The Gating Criteria Committee met this afternoon to determine modes of learning for when school resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021. Derby Public Schools is yellow on the gating criteria chart. Early Childhood-12th grade will return in-person for the weeks of January 4-15. Please note: All year, families had the option to choose either remote or in-person learning models at the start of each nine weeks. The remote option remains for all families who have selected this as their preferred model. The next opportunity to request a nine-week learning model change will be later in January. As a reminder, students in remote learning who wish to order school meals must do so on our website between noon on Friday and midnight on Sunday.

At the December 14, 2020 Board of Education meeting, a revised gating criteria considerations chart was approved. View chart HERE. This change is based on a recent recommendation from the Kansas State Board of Education. Under the revised criteria in the red category, Early Childhood-5th grade will operate in-person or move to a hybrid learning model. It is important to note on the gating criteria chart that a school could still move to remote on a case by case basis. Staffing and student absenteeism may impact the gating criteria and modes of learning at a particular school.

Please continue to follow safety protocols in place and do your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. It is imperative to monitor all symptoms and not come to school or work if you are sick or showing symptoms. Please review a daily symptom checklist HERE. Continue to follow these everyday preventive actions to help reduce the spread and ensure schools can operate in-person.

Friday, December 4, 2020 • Upcoming Parent Support and Training Sessions, December 8, 9, 10, 2020
Please mark your calendar for Support and Training sessions.

As we wrap the first week of district-wide remote learning, we wanted to provide additional resources and training for our families. We have heard of a variety of needs and questions, and we want you to know that we are here to support you.

A variety of brief sessions will be offered via Zoom specifically for parents/guardians to learn about tutoring support, technology, curriculum, social-emotional resources, health, attendance, and tips for supporting learning/remote classes at home. Sessions will be offered at various times for three days, on December 8, 9, and 10. View the schedule and sign-up HERE. Note: If you are interested in a session but unable to attend yourself, you are able to sign-up for a session and are welcome to share this with whoever your child’s caretaker is during remote learning (i.e. grandparent, babysitter, etc)

Please sign up/register for the dates and times that work for your schedule by checking the appropriate boxes. Please select sessions that will best meet your concerns or needs for supporting your child/youth. The links to the presentations will be sent to you by email prior to the date of the presentation.

Board Meeting Notification: Special Board Meeting Will Take Place Friday, November 27, 2020, 9:00AM • Zoom Meeting
There will be a Special Board of Education meeting on Friday, November 27, 2020 via Zoom. The live board meeting can be viewed by patrons on YouTube Live with the link posted on the board landing page, HERE.

Patrons wishing to speak before the board during the public comment section can email the board clerk at lhoyt@usd260.com or submit a comment in writing by clicking here. Written comments or requests to speak must be submitted before Thursday, November 24, 2020 at 4:30PM. Submitted written comments will be summarized by the board president during the comments section with a copy provided to the entire board after the meeting.

As a reminder the following are the district procedures for Citizen/Community Presentations Before the Board -
The Board of Education has a strong desire to hear from its constituents living in Derby Public Schools boundaries. Please state your name and address. Be brief in your remarks and avoid repeating the views of previous speakers. I ask that groups with the same special interest appoint a spokesperson. You are given a maximum of five minutes to address the Board.

Comments should refer to issues and not personalities. The Board shall not hear personal complaints concerning any employee or groups of employees of the school district or any person connected with the school district. These concerns should be addressed through following the Board’s KN policy procedures or contacting the administration.

Presentations must not be disruptive, and speakers must model the behavior we expect from our students befitting the occasion and the dignity of the board meeting.

The open forum allows for the Board to hear public comment but there should be no expectation on the part of the citizen for a response at this time. The Board will take your comments under advisement and conduct its business within the confines of Board protocol.

The Special Board meeting scheduled for Monday, November 30, 2020 at 5:30PM has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Wednesday, November 25, 2020 • Derby Public Schools Moving to Remote Learning District-Wide Through Winter Break

Sedgwick County’s Local Health Officer Dr. Garold Minns, signed an order which further increases community restrictions. This order, which will be in effect from 12:01 a.m., Friday, November 27 to 11:59 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2021. Dr. Minns also provided a recommendation that schools should utilize remote learning as much as possible.

After also meeting with the Gating Criteria Committee earlier this morning, Derby Public Schools was determined to be in red on the gating criteria chart and is moving all schools to remote learning through Winter Break.
• For elementary, your child’s school will provide follow-up information by the end of the week. For secondary, remote learning continues as you have been doing the last two weeks.
• If you’re in need of WiFi support, please visit www.derbyschools.com/returntolearn. This link also has other helpful COVID-19 resources.
• Free meals are available to all remote learners. Orders must be placed on our website HERE by Sunday evening at midnight.

Please note this decision to go remote district-wide will be discussed at a Special Board of Education meeting. The date and time is to be determined. This will be shared via Skylert and posted on the district website once available.

The Gating Criteria Committee will reconvene on December 30 at 1:00 p.m. to determine the learning modes to begin second semester. Please continue to follow safety protocols in place and do your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. We all share a responsibility to keep our community safe and reduce the spread and the effects it has on our learning environment. I urge everyone to make adjustments and follow safety protocols to help lower the positive case numbers in our community again.

Tuesday, November 10, 2020 • Gating Criteria Decision for Learning Mode Weeks of November 16-24
After input, discussion and reviewing data with the Gating Criteria Committee earlier this afternoon, Derby Public Schools is orange on the gating criteria chart. We will be continuing in-person for grades Early Childhood-5 and shifting to remote learning for grades 6-12 for the weeks of November 16-24.

For students in grades 6-12, your child’s school will provide follow-up information about remote learning by the end of the week. Free meals are available to remote students, please see order details on our website HERE.

Positive case and quarantine data will be reviewed again on November 25 at 9:00AM to determine modes of learning from November 30 until Winter Break. Review items from the Gating Criteria Committee meeting for November 16-24: District Safety Security Logistics Plan and Gating Criteria Considerations.

We all share a responsibility to keep our community safe and reduce the spread and the effects it has on our learning environment. This is a community issue, not just a school issue. I urge everyone to make adjustments to help positive cases begin to trend downward again.

After input from the Gating Criteria Committee earlier this afternoon, Derby Public Schools will be continuing in-person for grades Early Childhood-12 for the weeks of September 21-October 2. Additionally, the district will no longer be doing temperature checks upon arrival for students starting September 21. Staff will continue to do temperature checks. We encourage families to do this at home and continue to monitor symptoms prior to coming to school. At the August 24, 2020 Board meeting Gating Criteria, Considerations, Based on COVID-19 Community Transmission was approved. Derby Public Schools reviewed gating criteria recommendations from the Sedgwick County Health Department, Kansas State Department of Education’s Navigating Change and Kansas National Educators Association, and worked with local health professionals to develop criteria for the district. The Gating Criteria Committee will utilize this document on a regular basis for the district learning and operational mode. As shared previously (district updates HERE), families had the option to select, based on 9-week periods, their preference between two learning models: In-Person (may switch to hybrid or remote when determined by district Gating Criteria) or Remote Only. We are utilizing the approved gating criteria to determine when school will be fully in-person or shift to hybrid or remote. Gating criteria does not impact those who already selected to be Remote Only.

You will be receiving more information in the coming days from your child’s school on what to anticipate for the start of school, scheduling meet the teacher appointments and more. At the August 24 Board of Education meeting, Derby Public Schools will bring for Board approval “Gating Criteria Considerations” that will be used to determine when schools should shift between learning models for those who selected in-person. Gating Criteria would consider a variety of COVID-19 factors including the percentage of positive cases in our county. For those who have selected in-person school, our goal is to start in person but it must be done safely. We will share more information at the end of the day August 26.

Back to School/Meet the Teacher Appointments: These will be held on September 2-3. Schools will communicate how to sign up for a time. This opportunity will be offered face-to-face. Scheduled times for each student will help maintain a lower number of people throughout the buildings. However, buildings will work with those who may not be comfortable with an in-person meeting and may meet via Zoom or another method. Schools will also communicate your child’s teacher and/or student’s course schedule at a later date.

Please note: For those who selected the in-person learning model, your student’s hybrid schedule (only to be implemented when needed) will be shared during the Meet the Teacher appointment so you have this schedule in advance. The goal of a hybrid schedule is to use when the rate of community spread is higher and this model allows for smaller class sizes and cohort groups. When a hybrid schedule must be used, students would split into smaller attendance cohorts on either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. Tuesday, August 4, 2020 • Message to 2020 Graduates

2020 Graduates, your Cap and Gown Celebration is set for Saturday, August 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Panther Stadium. We are very excited to celebrate your achievements! Due to COVID-19 restrictions on crowd size, each graduate may have two guests attend the celebration. Tickets may be picked up at Derby High School starting Monday, August 10 through Thursday, August 13 from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and August 14 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Graduates or family members may not pick up tickets for other graduates. Unfortunately we are unable to host the Academic Awards assembly and Luncheon. Those receiving Academic Awards including honor cords may also pick those up at DHS with their tickets. If unable to attend the ceremony or pick up your items this week, please contact the high school to coordinate a time to pick up your items.

All graduates attending are to meet inside the Panther Baseball Field in their Cap and Gown at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, August 15. Feel free to wear comfortable shoes as we will walk from the baseball field and march into Panther Stadium.

We apologize for any inconvenience the limit on guests may cause families and graduates, but providing a ceremony to honor the graduates while providing a safe atmosphere and following restrictions is important to keep in mind. We are committed to have as many guests as possible celebrate the success of our graduates. If a graduate doesn’t plan to use their tickets and wishes to disperse theirs, they are welcome to do so. Additionally, if all tickets aren’t picked up, any unclaimed tickets will be available to from 3:30-4:30PM on August 14 at Derby High School. We will post at 3PM on August 14 on the Derby Public Schools Facebook page if unclaimed tickets are available. If so, a graduate or family member may pick up a maximum of two more additional tickets. Starting at 4:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. any remaining unclaimed tickets will be given with no limit on a first come, first served basis until they run out.

A few other notes to share:
• We will livestream the event. We will communicate information on how to view when it is finalized.
• We are also looking into the logistics of bringing the bell to ring during this ceremony.
• Please note masks will be required until you are seated and any other time 6 feet social distancing can not be maintained.
• Gates at Panther Stadium will open at 6:30 p.m. for guests arriving. Strict social distancing will be enforced. Those attending are welcome to sit anywhere within Panther Stadium with the exception of the turf surface. Lawn Chairs are welcome.

Tonight was another lengthy Board of Education meeting and we appreciate all those who tuned into to learn more details regarding the upcoming school year. Tonight we had well over 600 viewers eager to learn more. A number of items were discussed and approved at the July 27 Board of Education Meeting. Items to note:

Please know this change is to give staff additional time to collaborate on new learning models and plan for the scenarios they may face during the year due to COVID-19. It will also allow for training on health and safety protocols to be implemented in district facilities. The board made a motion to ensure that classified staff would not lose any pay. Friday, July 24, 2020 • Survey Sent to Families

Derby Public Schools is looking at the possibility of modifying the school year calendar. We would like to gain your feedback on three different calendar options (the originally approved calendar and two new draft options). We will plan to discuss the school year calendar at the Monday, July 27 Board of Education meeting. After the calendar is Board approved, we will share the calendar with staff and families. Please submit your selection of the 2020-2021 school year calendar by Sunday, July 26 at 11:59 PM. Please look at each option closely to take into consideration. Each calendar option has a different start date.

Original Approved Calendar: School starts August 13. At the July 20 Board of Education meeting the Board approved changing the original first day from August 12 to 13 to allow for additional Back to School Night times for families to visit the classroom/school. August 12 would be times for families set-up appointments which is in addition to the Back to School Night already scheduled.

Draft Calendar Option 1: School starts September 8. Student contact time would be 9 days less than the original calendar and classified support staff has 4.5 less days of pay/work.

Draft Calendar Option 2: School starts August 26. Student contact time would be 5 days less than the original calendar and classified support staff does not lose any days of pay/work. Any decrease in student contact time is shifted to staff inservice/work time to prepare for the school year.

Wenesday, July 22, 2020 • Follow-Up School Year Calendar Information

As shared earlier today, the State Board of Education voted 5-5 on Executive Order 20-58, which would require schools to start school after Labor Day. This means the executive order was not affirmed as the vote required a majority vote on the State’s 10-member board. Under new state law, Governor Laura Kelly must get approval from the State Board of Education to issue an executive order to close or delay schools.

We will continue to provide more information on the impact this has on the 2020-2021 school year once we work out details in the coming days. Governor Kelly is recommending schools start later because of the COVID-19 cases that Kansas is currently experiencing, however, this decision on when to start school is now up to local school districts. Our next Board of Education meeting is Monday, July 27 at 6:30PM. The Board of Education will be discussing the school year calendar at this meeting and we hope to have more information to share after this meeting.

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 • Return to Learn 2020-2021 School Year Plans and Enrollment

Derby Public Schools families,

We wanted to provide you an update on the Return to Learn plan discussed at last night’s Board of Education meeting. Our Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve two learning models for the 2020-2021 school year: in-person (may transition to hybrid or online when needed) and remote (online only). The BOE did not approve other logistics within the Return to Learn draft plan last night. The Board requested to add a meeting to further discuss details of the plan and other safety guidance on July 27 at 6:30 pm via Zoom/YouTube Live. With their motion, families will also be able to switch their learning model preferences selected during enrollment, if desired, for 48 hours after the date the safety plan is approved by the Board of Education and published.

There are many more questions to answer and we will continue to provide more updates as new information is available, but this does give us a step to start moving ahead in school year planning, including enrollment.

A few updates and important notes:

Enrollment: Online enrollment for returning and pre-enrolled students will begin on July 22. View in-person enrollment for new students dates and times can be viewed HERE. During enrollment, families will be asked to select, based on their comfort levels, and commit to a learning model for a 9-week grading period. An exception to this included in the Board of Education’s approval last night of learning models is that families will also be able to switch their learning model preferences selected during enrollment, if desired, for 48 hours after the date the safety plan is approved by the Board of Education and published. School Year Fees: During enrollment, one of the steps you will be asked is to pay your student fees. If fees are unable to be paid at this time, a Promise to Pay form must be completed. (Note: If after enrolling, your comfort level changes on returning to one of the learning models provided at Derby Public Schools, refunds may be granted if requested prior to the first day of school. Contact your building to start the withdrawal and refund process prior to the first day of school.)

With Governor Laura Kelly’s announcement of an executive order to delay opening schools until after Labor Day, we understand there are many questions and know you are eager to have more information. As a reminder, the Derby Public Schools “Return to Learn” plan will be shared at the July 20, 2020 Board of Education meeting. Additionally, the Kansas Board of Education must also discuss and vote to approve the Governor’s executive order next week. July 20, 2020 Board of Education Meeting and Return to Learn School Year Plan

As a reminder, the Derby Public Schools “Return to Learn” plan will be shared at the July 20, 2020 Board of Education meeting. The July 20 Board of Education meeting packet has been posted on the district’s landing page found HERE. The live board meeting can be viewed via the YouTube Live Link.

We are still thoroughly going through the Kansas State Department of Education’s (KSDE) "Navigating Change: Kansas’ Guide to Learning and School Safety Operations" document to carefully discuss and consider the guidance as well as Governor Laura Kelly’s announcement to delay opening schools until after Labor Day. KSDE’s guidance was approved on July 15. We will plan to have a draft of our district's "Return to Learn" school year plan document available Monday by 10:00AM on our website, www.derbyschools.com under "Return to Learn / COVID-19 Information", so stakeholders can review ahead of our Board of Education meeting. This will be in draft format until after the Board of Education approves the plan.

Good Afternoon Derby Public Schools Families,

Governor Laura Kelly announced this afternoon that opening school will be delayed until after Labor Day. Additionally, today the Kansas State Board of Education approved the Navigating Change: Kansas' Guide to Learning and School Safety Operation. Click HERE for the approved document. We are working together with representatives from the Derby National Education Association (DNEA) Executive Committee and Derby’s Return to Learn Task Force regarding our district’s Return to Learn Plan and ensuring it aligns with the state and local Health Department Guidance. We still plan to hold a Zoom Board of Education meeting on Monday, July 20, at 6:30 PM to present and discuss the proposed curricular plan with the intent to request Board approval for once we are able to open school buildings.

We are aware this has prompted many questions, we will continue to provide updates as additional details become available, including how it may impact enrollment process timelines and the first day of school for our students. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Derby Public Schools Families,

I hope that you are enjoying your summer. An Enrollment Update newsletter with information on how to enroll and other important annual notices for the upcoming year should be arriving in your mailbox soon. As we await official guidance from the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) on possible learning models for the school year, we are requesting that you provide us with additional feedback for planning purposes. Responding to the survey does NOT commit your family to any particular schooling format but will provide us with information for planning purposes. Please complete one survey for each student in your family that attends Derby Public Schools. Please complete the survey HERE by noon July 16.

Please note one change to my last update sent on June 30 HERE - the district will present school year plans to the Board of Education on July 20 via Zoom/YouTube live link instead of the previously shared July 27. This is to ensure we get families and staff information as soon as possible as we know plans may affect childcare and work. July 8, 2020 • Update on Mask Requirements at Derby Public Schools

Dr. Garold Minns, Sedgwick County’s Health Officer, announced on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, that he would sign an emergency order to require face masks in Sedgwick County. This order goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 10 and is in place until midnight on August 9, 2020.

Dr. Minns shared that after looking at the number of cases increasing in the county, as well as hospitalizations increasing, that face masks should be required. The order also calls for everyone in the county to adhere to Phase 3 of Governor Laura Kelly’s Ad Astra Plan, which includes limiting mass gatherings to 45 individuals in one location where social distancing is not available.

Masks should be worn while inside any indoor or outdoor public space where distancing of six feet at all times is not possible, and in line and waiting to enter an indoor public space. Exceptions to this order include children five and under and others not able to safely wear a mask, as listed in the public health order. Read the order HERE.

Current student programming immediately impacted by this order include the following:
Summer PrimeTime, Latchkey and Extended School Year (ESY): All students and employees are required to wear a mask; unless exempt.
Free Meal Sites: Central Kitchen/Oaklawn/Wineteer host free summer meal sites. Staff working and patrons who are over the age of five who visit this site are required to wear a mask.
Athletics: Athletes who are able to maintain 6 feet distance from others with only infrequent or incidental moments of closer proximity are not required to wear a mask. If unable to do this, masks are required.

Dear Families and Staff,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer with family and friends. While we know there is still over a month left of summer break, we know there are many questions about the upcoming school year. In my last message sent to you on May 20, it was shared that we were already planning for Fall 2020. I would like to share an update on what to anticipate over the next few weeks as we prepare for the new school year.

What Will School Look Like?

School districts across the state will be receiving guidance from the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) by mid-July. Derby Public Schools will adapt as necessary and merge our Continuous Learning Task Force recommendations with the state’s guidance. Our Task Force has been meeting to discuss options and review feedback from families, students and staff. I’d like to say THANK YOU to the individuals who are working throughout their summer break to ensure we will have meaningful learning experiences while always keeping safety as our top priority.

We will bring our proposed plans to our Board of Education on July 27. If our school’s normal environment has to be modified, other possible learning environment options may include in-person, online or hybrid model (a combination of in-person, online and independent work). When additional information that affects what the next school year is available after this Board of Education meeting, we will update families and staff via our website, social media and Skylert (our mass notification tool).

We plan to welcome back students on August 12 (20-21 school year calendar HERE). We know that the future impact of COVID-19 is unpredictable and requires that we plan for multiple scenarios. I’d like to share a few brief highlights on possible learning models and a general back to school timeline below. Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEPs) and other educational support plans will receive appropriate accommodations regardless of the learning environment we are in. Students will also have grading expectations for any of the possible learning models. Please know that more details will be available in the coming weeks.

Possible Learning Models

In-Person Learning
We are excited to see our students and staff back in our buildings! Our hope is to be able to offer an in-person option of school this fall. Students who attend in-person will have additional COVID-19 safety measures in place.

Remote Learning Environment (Online-Only Instruction)
It is possible that online-only instruction by Derby Public Schools staff may be offered as a learning option to families who elect to learn from home. An online-only instruction program would have these key elements:
• Instruction by certified Derby Public Schools teachers
• Mirror Derby Public Schools curriculum and standards
• Include live instruction with a mix of online activities, lessons and assessments

Please note: Online instruction will also be offered to all enrolled students at times when school is not able to take place in person due to COVID-19 circumstances.

Hybrid Learning (a combination of in-person and online)
If needed at any point, Derby Public Schools may adopt a hybrid learning model. Hybrid learning would only apply to students who elected to enroll in the traditional, in-person school (not online-only). Hybrid instructional schedules would have some in-person instruction and some online live instruction and assignments for students in a given week.

A survey will be sent to families in July to gain information on any preferences that may be offered regarding the above learning model options. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the local health department and KSDE will continue to guide our planning.

Here are dates to keep in mind leading up to the first day of school. Updates will be provided as we begin to see how the 2020-21 school year looks for our families and staff.
• July 9: Enrollment Update in mailboxes (approximate date). View HERE. Please know the information in this Enrollment Update is applicable no matter what type of setting we may be in this school year.
• July 14-15: State Board of Education to receive KSDE Guidance for Schools
• July 16: Kansas State Department of Education releases plan; district leadership will receive detailed training on the recommendations.
• July 16-24: Derby Public Schools will modify plans to align with KSDE guidance.
• July 27: Present school year plans to the Board of Education (meeting is 6:30PM at Derby North Middle School). Families and staff will receive an update via Skylert (mass notification tool) on school year plans later this week.
• Aug. 6: Middle School Back to School Night, 5:30PM-7:30PM

We realize families and staff will be looking for information regarding transportation, food service, before and after school programs, and much more. Although there are some unknowns, we are looking forward to another amazing year of accomplishments and will be ready to adapt to changes that come our way.
