As we prepare to welcome students back for the 2020-2021 school year, we want to ensure you are aware of safety procedures in place across the district. My name is Matt Liston and I am the district’s Safety and Security Officer. I am a twenty-seven year veteran of the Derby Police Department, was the first School Resource Officer (SRO) with Derby Public Schools in 1997 and supervised the unit from 2004 until retirement in 2019. I am also an instructor with the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO).

I want to assure you that safety and security is always at our forefront. It is our first responsibility to ensure our students and staff are safe. Each year, we practice a variety of drills, have many different safety precautions in place, have great partnerships with local law enforcement agencies as well as conduct ongoing updates and training for staff and students. Below is a safety overview of various areas of Derby Public Schools:

All schools will have storm shelters, intruder locks, enhanced security cameras and better ADA accessibility, thanks to the 2018 Bond. A secured access vestibule provides each school’s office staff control over who enters the building. SafeVisitor, a digital visitor management system, is utilized at each school. This is a comprehensive system that enhances our school entrance security, streamlines the check-in process and helps us to be aware of everyone in our schools so that we can account for them in the event of an emergency. Learn more HERE.

Derby Public Schools uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for crisis response. This is a simplified crisis response that helps staff, students, parents and first responders to quickly and adequately respond to crisis situations. The SRP is based on five actions: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter and Hold. Find more information on the SRP, including a Parent Reference Guide, HERE. Derby Public Schools also has designated Building Crisis Teams in each school. These proactive teams meet regularly to discuss safety and security-related topics. In addition to our Building Crisis Teams, our District Crisis Team is comprised of school and department representatives. Community partners also have a presence on the District Crisis Team, which includes the Derby Police Department, Derby Fire Department and Sedgwick County Emergency Management. This team actively works together to advise and help develop training and resources for the district.

The Derby Police Department provides School Resource Officers at both our middle schools and at Derby High School. Police Sergeant Tim Nelson is the Community Education Unit Supervisor. SROs work with schools to offer additional safety and security, enforcement of state laws and city ordinances, along with mentoring and building relationships with students. Additionally, SROs work closely with the district’s Safety and Security Officer to cooperatively create and implement comprehensive safety plans. You may reach the assigned officers at their buildings or contact them through the Police Department with questions or concerns. Meet our SROs and view contact information HERE.

There are also tools available to anonymously leave a tip if you have a school safety concern. It takes us all to be vigilant and it is vital that if you see something of concern, you say something. There is a Kansas School Safety Hotline, 1 (877) 626-8203, which can be used to anonymously report any potential school violence. The Kansas School Safety Hotline is there for you 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher takes your call and notifies the appropriate stakeholders. Derby Public Schools also adopted a program, See Something Say Something, to keep our schools safe and provide anyone the ability to submit anonymous tips through additional methods. Students, staff and parents can send anonymous tips through a secure website, app or phone number. The funding for this service is provided by Crime Stoppers of Wichita and Sedgwick County a division of The Wichita Metro Crime Commission. More information HERE

Newly implemented this year are COVID-19 safety precautions. We are working hard to mitigate risk and to keep students and staff safe through a variety of measures including masks, temperature checks, additional sanitation, visitor protocol and more. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please be sure to check out the district’s PPE, Gating Criteria Considerations and Safety and Logistics plan in place. These can be found HERE.

If you have safety questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone (316) 788-8425, at mliston@usd260.com or visit www.derbyschools.com/safetyoverview.

Sincerely,

Matt Liston

Safety and Security Officer
