The Derby Public Schools Board of Education has made the appointment of Althea Arvin for the vacancy on the board. Arvin will serve on the Board of Education until the first Board of Education meeting in January 2020.

School board members serve an important role, as they develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system.

Due to the recent board vacancy, a process for replacement was established. Notice of the vacancy and replacement process were shared via multiple outlets, including published notice in Derby Informer and on the district website. The application process and a KASB Publication for Candidates were made available.

More detailed information on this process can be found in the April 22, 2019 Board packet. Read the notice of the vacancy and process for replacement HERE and the KASB Publication HERE.

For those individuals interested in the vacancy, an opportunity to learn more was provided on May 6 at 6:30PM at the Derby Public Schools Administrative Center. The evening was designed to share the roles, responsibilities and time commitments of a Board of Education Member. Time was also allocated to answer candidate questions.

The application deadline of May 9, 2019 was given and candidates were asked to attend the May 13, 2019 Board of Education Meeting and respond to the following question: “What would you like to see as priorities of the Board of Education of the Derby Public Schools over the next three to five years?” At this meeting, the Board voted to appoint Althea Arvin to the unfilled position until the first meeting in January 2020. Arvin will begin serving at the May 28, 2019 meeting.

“Our board’s decisions impact the future of every student and staff at Derby Public Schools,” Heather Bohaty Superintendent of Schools, said. “Their jobs are done entirely on a volunteer basis. They attend many meetings and trainings, read reports and research, and attend specialized professional development to stay on top of education issues and trends. This is all done to ensure they are well-informed on decisions they are asked to make.”

Thank you to Althea Arvin, Ronald Chronister, David McDonald, Judy Morris, Jesse Pitchford and Dustin Walck for participating in this process as candidates!
