January is School Board Recognition Month, and Derby Public Schools would like to thank these community leaders who serve as Board of Education members (pictured above left to right): Pamela Doyle, Robin Folkerts (Vice President), Matthew Joyce, Justin Kippenberger, Tina Prunier, Mark Tillison and Andy Watkins (President).

School board members develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. For Derby Public Schools, they bear responsibility and oversight for an annual budget of $100,274,417 million, 6,832 students, 1,195 employees and 19 facilities.

“Our board has navigated challenging times this year due to COVID-19. They have worked to listen to all stakeholders, medical professionals and Sedgwick County Health Department guidance to make decisions that impact every student and staff at Derby Public Schools, while also still following through on bond progress and other important decisions,” Heather Bohaty, Superintendent of Schools, said. “Their jobs are done entirely on a volunteer basis and many hours are dedicated to moving our district forward. This is all done to ensure they are well-informed on decisions they are asked to make.”

Derby Public Schools encourages the entire community to thank a school board member, not only this month but throughout the entire year. “We are so thankful for these seven dedicated individuals serving our community as school board members,” Bohaty said. “They serve as great advocates and are committed to providing quality education to meet the needs of families during these unprecedented times.”

Thank you, Board members!
