Welcome to Derby Public Schools!

This is an exciting time for you and your child as they begin their school journey. We are honored to be part of this milestone and look forward to working together to provide the best educational experience possible. 

We are proud to have an amazing team of district leaders, teachers, and support staff dedicated to student success. Our comprehensive, developmentally appropriate curriculum supports all learners, ensuring each child has the tools to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. 

To help us better understand your child’s development and provide the best support possible, we ask that families complete the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). This screening helps teachers learn more about your child’s strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful. 

At home, you can help prepare your child for Kindergarten by:
• Reading together daily to build language and comprehension skills.
• Practicing counting, recognizing letters, and writing their name.
• Encouraging independence with tasks like putting on shoes and opening lunch containers.
• Talking about what to expect in Kindergarten to build excitement and confidence.

Parent and guardian involvement is valued and encouraged. Each of our schools will offer opportunities for you to be engaged, whether through site councils, parent-teacher organizations, or various school events and activities. We look forward to connecting with you and your child at our Elementary Back-to-School Conferences on August 10, from 8AM-12PM and 4-7PM. This is a special time for teachers to meet with each student and family one-on-one before the school year begins. Schools will communicate how to schedule a time later this summer.

Our goal is to work in partnership with you to help your child enjoy school, love learning, and develop the skills necessary for lifelong success. We are excited to begin this journey with you and can’t wait to see all your child will accomplish in their first year!
