Welcome to Derby Public Schools!

This is an exciting time for you and your child as they begin their school journey. We are honored to be part of this milestone and look forward to working together to provide the best educational experience possible. 

We are proud to have an amazing team of district leaders, teachers, and support staff dedicated to student success. Our comprehensive, developmentally appropriate curriculum supports all learners, ensuring each child has the tools to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. 

Parent and guardian involvement is valued and encouraged. Each of our schools will offer opportunities for you to be engaged, whether through site councils, parent-teacher organizations, or various school events and activities. To help us better understand your child’s development and provide the best support possible, we ask that families complete the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). This screening helps teachers learn more about your child’s strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful. 

At home, you can help prepare your child for Kindergarten by:
• Reading together daily to build language and comprehension skills.
• Practicing counting, recognizing letters, and writing their name.
• Encouraging independence with tasks like putting on shoes and opening lunch containers.
• Talking about what to expect in Kindergarten to build excitement and confidence.

Our goal is for your child to love learning, enjoy their time in school, and gain the skills they need for lifelong success. We are excited to begin this journey with you and can’t wait to see all your child will accomplish in their first year!
