Derby Public Schools offers a variety of ways parents and community members can be involved throughout our district through committees and volunteer opportunities. Board of Education Seeking Candidates for DRC Board Appointment
Derby Public Schools Board of Education is seeking candidates interested in serving as a Derby Recreation Commission (DRC) Board member for a four-year term. In 1980, the DRC was created through a joint resolution between the City of Derby and USD 260 and approved by the voters of Derby Public Schools. The DRC is a joint recreation commission, meaning two of its Board Members are appointed by the City of Derby, two of its Board Members are appointed by Derby Public Schools, and the final Board Member is appointed at-large by the other four members.
At the May 12, 2025 Board of Education meeting, a timeline was approved to interview for the open DRC Board Appointment position. The appointment to the Derby Recreation Board of Directors is a four-year volunteer term served without compensation. Interested applicants should review the requirements and timeline below. The original resolution stipulates that one of the school district appointees must reside outside the corporate limits of the City of Derby but within the boundaries of USD 260.
Timeline for DRC Board Appointment by Board of Education
May-June
• Advertise Opening and Application
• A three-member committee will be appointed by the Board President and will develop questions/procedures for interviews
June
• Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the Clerk of the Board, 1550 E. Walnut Grove Rd, Derby, KS or electronically tlies@usd260.com by 4:30PM on June 2, 2025.
• Interview Candidates
• Take the candidate recommendation to the second Board of Education meeting in June
July
• Take the candidate recommendation to the Board of Education for action at the first Board meeting in July
September
• Selected candidate begins serving on the DRC Board
Requirements: This appointment must reside outside the corporate limits of the City of Derby but within the boundaries of USD 260. Ability to attend monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of every month. Willingness to review relevant material and agendas, communicate with the DRC Superintendent, stakeholders and other Board members. A commitment to public service and a familiarity with members of the community. Experience working as part of boards or committees, or other significant organizational experience. Strong interest and/or experience in the provision of recreation services. Other valued characteristics would be knowledge of government, project management, risk management, finance, human resources and legal issues. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.

The Budget Committee reviews district finances and efficiencies and hep provide input on priorities.
The Calendar Committee develops a recommended school year calendar for Board of Education approval.
The Review Committee meets and responds to changes of instructional materials.
The Wellness Committee is focused on improving staff and student wellness.
2024-2025 Strategic Plan Committee Interest
Are you interested in serving on a committee for year three of the Strategic Plan? The 2022-2027 Derby Public Schools Strategic Plan is designed to be a roadmap for the district. The plan articulates a common foundation of expectations and goals in place to prepare our students and staff for success. We are seeking committee member representation to include students, staff, families, business partners and community members for each of the six established goal areas. We would welcome more than one person from the household to submit their name to serve on a committee. We ask that you please complete one form per person. If your child is a current student who wishes to serve as a student representative, you may also complete the form on their behalf.

Our goal with each of the strategic plan sub-committees is to actively participate and represent all stakeholders, including staff, families, students, community members and business partners. The work of these committees will shape what education looks like for future generations at Derby Public Schools! It is a great way to be involved and have your voice be heard.
Strategic Plan Committees
The School Climate & Culture Advisory Council identifies topics with a direct impact on school/district culture, engaging in open and productive conversations at the building level to discuss both aspects contributing to the culture and areas that require attention.
The Strategic Plan Steering Committee develops a five year comprehensive long range plan that is broken down by yearly goals and objectives aligned with the district mission.
The Special Education Parent Advisory Council serves to facilitate collaborative communication between parents and district professionals to work together for the betterment of special service students and providers.
The EC-12+ Academic Achievement committee is committed to strengthening academic achievement outcomes in Pre-Kindergarten through post-secondary to help each student find their individual success.
The Culture Climate & Equity committee is committed to creating a safe and positive culture by intentionally embracing our differences, providing equal opportunity for all, and inviting widespread participation for all educational stakeholders regardless of each person's unique characteristics, thoughts and/or opinions.
The Student & Staff Support for Special Services committee is committed to optimally allocating resources - staff program structure, training, etc. - to ensure all needs of students receiving special services are fully met.
The Student & Staff Mental Health & Wellness Supports committee is committed to creating, implementing and maintaining evidence-based mental health programs and services for all district employees and students that promote positive health and wellness knowledge, skills and behaviors.
The Facilities and Partnerships committee is committed to continually develop partnerships and update facilities to ensure equity and safety for everyone.
The Personnel Recruitment, Retention & Development committee is committed to attracting, developing and retaining a team of staff who support our educational community.
