Substitute Services

Apply to Be a Substitute Teacher

All applicants must be licensed by the Kansas State Department of Education, prior to applying. All applications must be submitted through our online application system. Apply for "Substitute Certified".

After you have submitted your application you will be contacted by email with instructions, if Derby Public Schools wishes to continue the application process of adding you to our pool of substitutes teachers. Orientation is required prior to substituting.
 

Substitute License - Kansas State Department of Education

A standard substitute license or emergency substitute license must be obtained  from the State of Kansas Department of Education.
 
 

Expanded Emergency Substitute License 

To get an expanded emergency substitute license in Kansas, you need a high school diploma, to complete the Greenbush Emergency Substitute Training Modules, and to pass a background check. You must also apply and pay the required fees, and get verification of hire from a specific school district. This license allows you to substitute for a maximum of 75 school days per semester, with no more than 25 consecutive days in the same assignment at that district.

 

We are accepting applications from individuals who have the following licenses:

  • Emergency Substitute License
  • Standard Substitute License
  • Initial Teaching License
  • Professional Teaching License


Apply to Be a Substitute Nurse

A substitute nurse in our district must have a current/valid license as a "Registered Nurse" from the Kansas State Board of Nursing. All applications must be submitted through our online application system. Select "Substitute Certified" and under the "Statement" section of the application, please state you are applying to be a substitute nurse.

After you have submitted your application you will be contacted by email with instructions, if Derby Public Schools wishes to continue the application process of adding you to our pool of substitutes nurses. An orientation is required prior to substituting.

Both substitute teachers and substitute nurses must also provide a completed Certification of Health for Substitutes. Certification of Health form will be accepted if dated within the past year.
 


Apply to Be a Classified Substitute

Classified Substitutes are individuals that substitute for our permanent employees, which includes our paraprofessionals, food service staff and custodians. Must be 18 years of age, a high school graduate/or GED and provide a Certification of Health for School Personnel.

All applications must be submitted through our online application system. Apply for "Substitute: Non-Certified". After you have submitted your application you will be contacted by email, if Derby Public Schools wishes to continue the process of adding you to our pool of classified substitutes. An orientation is required prior to substituting.

Rate of Pay

All Teacher and Nurse Substitutes

  • Full Day $130
  • Half Day $65
  • Long Term Substitute Full Day $175

  • Food Service Subs - $13.90
  • Maintenance Subs - $13.04
  • Instructional Support (except Health Room Aides) Subs - $13.36
  • Special Education Subs - $14.41
  • Health Room Aide Subs - $15.52
  • Building Clerical Subs - $13.51
  • District Clerical Subs - $14.01
