June 12, 2023 • Strategy 2 Final Year 1 Update

The Strategy 2 committee met on March 1, 2023 at Swaney Elementary School. We were successful in gathering input for the School Climate and Culture Advisory Council on what characteristics we want Derby Public Schools to be known for. Co-Chair Bryan Chadwick spoke to the committee from the eyes of a coach and what it takes to build a strong team. We believe that the character traits we came up with will promote effective teamwork between every stakeholder within Derby Public Schools.

The Strategy 2 committee met on April 6, 2023. The chairs had researched ideas for the surveys that will be administered to students from 3rd grade to 12th grade and all parents of elementary, middle, and high school. Questions were presented to the committee and discussion took place to create a climate/culture survey for Elementary students in grades 3-5, middle school, and high school students along with all parents of Derby Public School students.

We are asking for a couple of revisions to the Strategy 2 committee action steps.

  • Provide the survey during October conferences (send via Skylert and have devices available at conferences) instead of by September 30, 2023.
    • October will give students and parents the opportunity to become more familiar with their school.
    • Parents will be in schools for conferences and computer kiosks can be set up to aid parents in completing the survey.

  • Revise which students take the survey in elementary schools:

    • 3-5 grade specific

The Strategy 2 committee met on May 11, 2023 to discuss items that had been shared at the first School Climate and Culture Advisory Council meeting. We were able to solidify how we will partner with the council and support them in various ways. Committee Chair, Donna Osborn, had received input from Special Services in regards to the Americans with Disabilities Act question which will be on every parent survey. The committee went over action steps for year 2 cycle of the strategic plan . It has been a successful year, and our committee looks forward to serving the Derby School District in the future.

March 6, 2023 • Strategy 2 Update

The Strategy 2 committee met on December 1, 2022, at Derby North Middle School. Heather Bohaty, Superintendent, presented the purpose of the School Climate and Culture Advisory Council and opened up the floor for questions. Mrs. Bohaty asked the Strategy 2 committee for feedback on what we wanted representation to look like for those appointed to serve on the School Climate and Culture Advisory Council. After much discussion, it was decided that each school would utilize their building’s One Degree Compass Climate and Culture Committee to gather building-related topics, ideas, and/or concerns to take to the School Climate and Culture Advisory Council. Principals recommended names from their building One Degree Compass Climate and Culture Committee for board approval on January 23, 2023.

November 28, 2022 • Strategy 2 Update

Strategy 2 met for the first time on November 10, 2022 and had 24 committee members in attendance. We did introductions, set up norms, and looked at the “why” for our committee. There was a brief overview of Strategy 2 and then we dove deeper into looking at potential representatives that would be beneficial on the Advisory Council and began brainstorming on what the Climate, Culture, and Equity survey would look like. Concerns were expressed about the number on this advisory committee. It was suggested that each building have a representative to help carry the message to the advisory committee. What is an appropriate age for membership? Consider marginalized group status. Members should include staff, students (age appropriate), minorities, parents, and military.

We separated into groups and brainstormed ideas for questions for the survey that will be given in September of the 2023 school year. We will be meeting at Derby North Middle School on December 15, 2023. The committee was excited to be able to see different schools within the Derby School district.
