ParentSquare will become the district's primary communication platform, replacing most tools such as Skylert, Remind, TeamReach, ClassDojo and other communication apps used for district, school, classroom, team and activity updates.

ParentSquare does not replace Skyward Family Access, Canvas, other learning management systems or district email. Families and students will continue to use those systems for student information, grades, assignments and other instructional purposes.

One ParentSquare account can connect all students associated with the same parent/guardian email address.

ParentSquare can deliver messages through email, text messages, phone calls and app notifications. Families can customize notification preferences after activating their account. 

Effective July 1, 2026, Derby Public Schools will implement changes to its communication practices to comply with HB 2299 (Cell Phone and Social Media Communication Bill). As required by HB2299, school boards must adopt policies and procedures prohibiting district employees from: 

• Privately or directly communicating with students through social media platforms, except when such communication occurs through a board-approved platform used for official school purposes; and
• Requiring students to use social media platforms for any assignment or extracurricular activity. 

The Board previously approved the purchase and implementation of ParentSquare as the district’s official communication platform for district, school, classroom and athletics/extracurricular communications. As we prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, families should expect the majority of school-related communications to be delivered through ParentSquare. Beginning July 1, 2026 staff-to-student/family communication for classroom, activity and athletic communications should be delivered through ParentSquare. 

Please note: Our current understanding is that HB2299 does not prohibit necessary phone calls, texts or use of district emails to parents or students related to school operations, student safety, transportation, activities or athletics. The law is primarily focused on electronic communications, especially social media communications. Staff should use the district-approved communication platform (ParentSquare) for routine electronic two-way communications and should keep direct phone, text and email communications with students limited to legitimate educational, activity, safety or operational purposes whenever possible.

Recent legislation also authorizes school boards to approve specific social media platforms for official district and school use. At the June 25 Board of Education meeting, to ensure compliance with these requirements while maintaining effective communication with students, families and the community, the Board approved the following platforms for official district and/or school use: Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Social media platforms may be used to share information and promote school activities; however, they may not be used for two-way communication with students. Communication with students must occur through district-approved and managed platforms.

In a web browser:

• Click your name in the top-right corner and select Manage Account.
• Click Security on the left and then Reset Password.

On the app:

• Tap Account from the menu and select Change Password.

In a web browser:

• Click your name in the top-right of the screen and then select Manage Account.
• Click Language and use the drop-down menu to select your language.

On the app:

• Tap the three-lined menu, select Account.
• Tap Preferences, then Language.
• Choose your language setting from the list.

Most schools do now allow parents to edit their own contact information. contact your school to request a change. Some schools do allow you to suggest a change through ParentSquare. For more, see the help article, Manage Your Account Settings.

Family members can share an email or phone number and yet have different accounts. If you are using the same email/phone number AND password, or Google Sign In, when you sign in you will select your own name.

Contact your school. Your school will be able to verify your identity and connect you to your child in ParentSquare.

You can text the word "START" to 66458.

Contact the school you wish to remove. They will update their records to remove you from ParentSquare for their school.

You can send a message to your child's teacher from Messages by clicking New Message. You can reply to a message from your principal, however, you cannot initiate a message to the principal. To learn more, see View, Send or Reply to a Direct Message.

Each contact (staff or parent record) has only one email and phone associated with it. A parent account can have multiple contacts, with multiple emails and phone numbers if they have different emails/phones for each child in the school database or across districts. Staff who are also parents can have multiple emails/phones. After verifying your contacts, you can set your preferred order of contacts in which to receive notifications.

From the sign in page:

• The next time you sign out and then sign in again, you will be asked to verify your contact information.

From My Account:

• Click on your name in the upper right and select Manage Account.
• Go to the yellow box, Missing kids, schools or contact info? and select Confirm Contact Info.

For security purposes, email and text verification codes are only valid for 10 minutes after they are requested. If you need another code, click Resend Code. If you request a new code, the previous code(s) will still be valid for those 10 minutes.

• Log in to ParentSquare through the browser.
• Click on your student's name in the top left.
• Click X to remove the current image.
• Upload a new, updated photo. Note: Student pictures can only be updated by parents.
