A Community Voice in What Comes Next
Derby Public Schools is now forming the District Growth & Facilities Advisory Committee to help prioritize projects, explore funding and implementation options, while also gathering additional community feedback. In June 2027, this committee will provide the Board of Education with a community-informed recommendation about future district investments, implementation priorities and potential funding pathways, while maintaining transparency, fiscal responsibility, long-term stewardship and a clear focus on student outcomes.

What the Committee Will Do

  • Review the future planning recommendations, facility condition assessments, enrollment analysis and other related planning information, then provide feedback on project priorities.
  • Help evaluate the educational, operational and financial impacts of potential projects.
  • Review district funding capacity and possible funding alternatives. This includes capital outlay, private partnerships, grants, bond financing and state bond aid considerations.
  • Gather and review community feedback.
  • Develop recommendations for Board of Education consideration by June 2027.

Who Should Express Interest?
The committee will include up to 35 members. The district is seeking a balanced group of people who bring different experiences, perspectives, attendance areas and connections to Derby Public Schools.

  • Parents/Guardians: Future families, early learning, elementary, middle school and high school perspectives; varied attendance areas and grade levels.
  • Students: Students representing diverse interests, experiences and viewpoints.
  • District Staff: This would include a variety of job types, both certified and classified staff.
  • Community Members: Business and industry, Work-Based Learning partners,  McConnell AFB, community organizations and residents without children currently enrolled.

What Participation Involves

  • Advisory role: The committee will provide community-based input and recommendations. Final decisions about projects and funding mechanisms remain with the Board of Education.
  • Selection: Individuals may submit an interest form for possible inclusion. District Administration will develop a balanced committee list and present the final selection to the Board of Education for approval.
  • Commitment: Members should be prepared to review information, consider multiple perspectives, participate in group discussion and attend meetings throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Consistent meeting attendance is integral to this process.
