Sun and fruit wearing sunglasses. Text: "Free Summer Meal Program"

Derby Public Schools is once again offering free summer meals—and this year, we have made some changes to make them even more convenient for families! Free Transportation is now being provided to Oaklawn, Cooper and Wineteer Elementary families (more details below).

Instead of daily meals, families can pick up one meal kit per child each week, available every Tuesday in June and July. Each meal kit will include five breakfasts and five lunches per child, making it easier than ever to keep kids nourished during the summer break. Some items will require refrigeration and cooking. Please refrigerate or freeze cold foods after pick-up.

Pick-Up Dates & Times. *First come, first served. Meal kits are served until they run out*

  • Tuesdays: June 3, 10, 17, 24 and July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

  • Time: 9AM-1PM

Pick-up is located at the Central Kitchen, 610 E. Market in Derby. You can only turn off Madison onto Bulldog Drive, then turn right onto Louisa to enter the pick-up line. (follow the green arrow on the map below). Please be patient as we work through the logistics of pick-ups and construction in the area.

Who is Eligible? Children ages 1 to 18 are eligible for these free meal kits.

Important Verification Information: If you did not verify your children in advance and do not have your assigned number with you in the vehicle, your children must be present at pick-up to verify household size. Verification is only available on site during pick-up dates and times, not in between pick-ups. Once verified, children do not need to be present for future pick-ups. Please have your assigned number in your vehicle.

Free Transportation to Meal Pick-Ups
Woodlawn United Methodist Church received a $2,000 grant from the United Methodist Ministry Fund, Hutchinson, KS, to help families who do not have transportation to a summer food distribution spot.

Thanks to this support, Derby’s Transportation Department will be offering a bus from Oaklawn, Cooper and Wineteer to pick up parents/guardians and their children who wish to participate in the summer meal kit distribution in Derby. After picking up meal kits, families will be dropped off back at the school.

Who can ride? Parents, along with their children ages 1-18. Children can not ride the bus to pick up a meal kit without a parent/guardian.

Verification: Children must be present the first time unless a parent/guardian has already verified their family size and has the required number flyer.

When? This will occur for each of the remaining pick-up dates, June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22 and July 29. A bus driver will arrive at Cooper at 9AM. The bus will then go to Oaklawn at 9:30AM. The driver will then return the passengers to their school after picking up meals. After dropping families back off in the Oaklawn area, the bus will then arrive at Wineteer Elementary at 10:25AM to pick up in that area and return families after.

Weather Notice
In the event of inclement weather (lightning within 10 miles or a severe weather warning), Derby Public Schools will pause meal distribution until conditions are safe. Pick-ups may be canceled without notice if weather conditions do not improve.
