District Leadership visited Eve Terrell, a 3rd Grade Teacher at Tanglewood Elementary, and Sherrie Rebel, a Reading Teacher at Derby North Middle School, with the exciting announcement that they are our district’s nominees for the 2027 Kansas Teacher of the Year!

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, honors outstanding educators in both elementary and secondary classrooms across the state. Its mission is to highlight excellence in teaching while building a strong network of exemplary educators who lead efforts to improve schools, enhance student achievement and elevate the teaching profession.

To be eligible, nominees must have at least five years of classroom experience and be recognized as respected, innovative leaders who inspire students of all backgrounds to achieve their best. They are admired by students, parents, and colleagues alike, foster a culture of respect and success, connect learning to the broader community, and model a commitment to lifelong growth and educational improvement in Kansas. Nominees gain the opportunity to join the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network, where they can advocate for students, influence education policy, mentor the next generation of teachers and serve as leaders and resources at the state level.
