The Derby Public Schools Board of Education remains committed to providing every student with an exceptional educational experience while preparing them for success beyond graduation. As part of that commitment, the Board has made several enhancements to its meeting structure for the 2026-2027 school year to strengthen its focus on academics, increase transparency, and provide additional opportunities for meaningful discussion regarding student learning and district initiatives.

One of the first changes you may notice is an updated Board agenda format and meeting schedule. Regular Board meetings will now be held once each month, with additional Board workshops scheduled throughout the year to allow more time for learning, discussion and planning. This structure provides dedicated opportunities for in-depth conversations while streamlining regular business meetings. A new agenda section, School and Department Successes & Highlights, has been added to each regular Board meeting. This section provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our students, staff, schools, and departments. At each meeting, the Board President will highlight one featured success, while encouraging Board members, families, and community members to review the additional accomplishments included in the Board packet. We believe it is important to regularly showcase the outstanding work taking place throughout Derby Public Schools.

Community transparency has also been enhanced through the addition of a Pre-Consent section on the agenda. This allows Board members and patrons to preview items that will appear on the Consent Agenda before formal action is taken, providing additional opportunity for review and understanding of upcoming recommendations.

Throughout the year, Board packets will also include written updates from district directors and leadership staff. These written reports will not be presented during the meeting, but will be included to provide ongoing information about the work occurring across our departments, helping keep our Board and community informed about district operations, initiatives, and progress toward strategic priorities.

To further strengthen the Board's focus on student achievement, an additional August Board Workshop will be dedicated to the district's annual Needs Assessment process. During these workshops, each school will present its academic goals, current student performance data, identified barriers, and resource needs to support continued improvement. These discussions provide valuable opportunities for the Board to better understand the unique needs of each building and ensure district resources remain aligned to student success.

During the school year, additional Board workshops have been scheduled to provide dedicated time for Board learning, professional development, in-depth discussions of district programming, and review of student achievement data. By moving these detailed discussions to workshops, the Board has been able to reduce the number of regularly scheduled business meetings.

The Board also looks forward to celebrating student achievement throughout the year. Student recognition opportunities have been intentionally scheduled during Board meetings to honor accomplishments in academics, writing,  extracurricular activities, Character Strong traits and other areas of excellence. These celebrations reflect the Board's commitment to recognizing the many ways Derby students demonstrate success both inside and outside the classroom.

These enhancements reflect the Derby Public Schools Board of Education's ongoing commitment to academic achievement, continuous improvement, transparent governance, and meaningful engagement with our families, staff and community. We invite you to follow along by reviewing Board agendas and packets, attending Board meetings, and celebrating the many successes occurring across Derby Public Schools throughout the year.
