Derby Pubilc Schools is proud to announce Jamie Rhue, El Paso Elementary teacher, and Rochell Knight, Derby Middle School teacher, have been named 2023 Kansas Horizon Award Winners.

The Horizon Award program offers Kansas school districts an excellent opportunity to honor exemplary first-year teachers. The program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, recognizes and rewards teachers who have served as outstanding representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state during their first year of teaching.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program is a regional competition corresponding to the state’s four U.S. congressional districts. The Kansas State Department of Education appoints regional selection committees responsible for reviewing nomination forms and selecting up to four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers per region for a possible total of 32 teachers. The possible 32 teachers, four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers from each region will be individually recognized during a luncheon at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference in February. They are also invited to participate as special guests in the two-day KEEN conference.

Congratulations, Jamie and Rochell - we are Derby Proud!
