Graduation update from Principal Tim Hamblin at the June 8, 2020 Board of Education meeting. Graduation is now tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2020 (previously May 10). This is pending both weather and any COVID-19 gathering guidelines, The celebration will attempt to encompass all the senior traditions including awards, presentations, cap and gown practice, and the ringing of the bell. Panther Pac will be hosting a luncheon for the graduates immediately following the ringing of the bell. At 8:00PM seniors will have their cap and gown ceremony at Panther Stadium. Diplomas will be mailed out this week.

The following message was sent to Derby High School parents and seniors from Principal Tim Hamblin on April 18, 2020.

Dear Panther Seniors and Parents,

As promised this is an update on the status of graduation. With the traditional Graduation plans scheduled for May postponed and after surveying our senior class for their input, I would like to share how Derby High School will honor the Class of 2020 and what the seniors will need to do in the coming weeks.

First, about graduation: without question graduation is a memorable milestone in a young person’s life. With so much uncertainty about the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing guidelines, and stay at home orders, it is not possible to commit to a firm date at this time. Facing this situation, I surveyed the members of the Class of 2020 and 87% of those responding said they wanted to have a gathering with their classmates, even if it is delayed into the fall. Seeing the survey results, a “Class of 2020 Weekend Celebration” has been planned for the seniors. The “Class of 2020 Weekend Celebration” will capture many of the traditional activities and events associated with graduation at DHS and introduce the graduates to some very old traditions to make the weekend even more memorable.

The “Class of 2020 Weekend Celebration” will include, but may not be limited to, an Academic Awards Assembly, the “Bell ringing tradition,” a luncheon and a Cap and Gown Celebration in Panther Stadium.  A date for this “Class of 2020 Weekend Celebration,” will be determined only when it is safe to do so.

Understanding that some seniors may not be able to or choose not to attend an event in the future, diplomas for the Class of 2020 will be mailed to seniors during the first week of June.  Academic awards such as honor cords may be picked up by seniors during the Academic Award Assembly or at DHS when it is deemed safe to do so.

In the coming weeks, the seniors will end their coursework and begin the checkout process. Plans about the return of district-owned property are being developed with the safety of everyone in mind and will be communicated to you in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your support of your student over the years and we look forward to celebrating your student’s success together at some point.
