Bond Election - Archived

The school bond election took place on February 20. We would like to thank the community for their involvement in asking questions and being engaged in this process. Thank you to our community for supporting our schools through this bond, and all those involved in the Process for Success who have dedicated the last two years planning and developing this bond issue. You all are what make our community a great place to raise a family. We are moving forward with bond planning related to question number 1 soon and look forward to a bright future. We will be sharing the next steps as we have them developed.

The district is facing many facility related issues that need to be addressed to provide for the growth that is occurring and to ensure that spaces can serve our student needs well into the future. These issues include a quickly growing area north of Patriot that is forcing over-population on nearby Derby Hills Elementary. A new elementary school in this fast growing area is needed to provide for the emerging need of an area that will only continue to grow. In addition, facilities that have served the district for over seventy years have a significant number of needs that would bring the cost of renovation close to the cost of new. Renovation would not gain the benefit of lower cost of operation in the long run due to inferior construction techniques and newer construction materials being much more energy efficient. A bond issue is important because it is the only option school districts have for raising the necessary funds to complete large projects and provide for the future educational needs of a community. The funding provided by the state only pays for day to day needs and minor maintenance. This same funding is used to buy technology for students, purchase buses for student transportation, and pay utility bills.

The Process for Success Committee began the task in March of 2016 of reviewing the school district's current facilities, looking at enrollment projections and assessing the best way to meet the current and long range facility needs of all students in an efficient and effective manner. The committee was made up of community members, parents and staff who have invested significant time and effort reviewing information. The committee put together a facilities master plan proposal outlining needs broken down by facility with elementary schools, middle schools, the high school, athletic facilities, maintenance and transportation renovations.

After gaining valuable input from the community since January 2017 on the committee's recommendations, Derby Public Schools is putting forth a bond proposal focused on student safety as well as quality educational space and environment for our students. The bond will address:
1. Safety and security at all district facilities, including storm shelters and ADA accessibility
2. Deferred maintenance
3. Efficiency and growth
4. Curriculum and program equity
