Elementary Curriculum Derby Public Schools Curriculum Department has adopted Imagine It!, a comprehensive Reading and Language Arts program which contains materials necessary to ensure success for both teachers and students. Each unit focuses on a specific theme and depending upon the grade level, contains explicit, systematic instruction on phonemic awareness, print and book awareness, alphabetic knowledge, phonics, fluency, word structure, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and writing, appropriate to the specific grade level. Each student reader contains literature, fiction and nonfiction, as well as poetry. The literature at all grade levels represents the diversity of our society. In addition, expository selections in science and social studies teach students to read in the content areas, and reinforce key state science and social studies standards. Secondary Curriculum The Derby Public Schools Curriculum department has recently adopted a new 21st Century ELA Curriculum. Pearson myPerspectives is a brand new English language arts curriculum for Grades 6–12 that values the perspective of the learner, collectively and individually, and provides next-gen learning experiences that promote higher achievement and develop the competencies needed for college and career readiness. Interactive learning blends print and technology in a student-centered, teacher-inspired classroom. This dynamic Pearson program creates an interactive, engaging, and relevant learning environment through readings, meaningful activities, and purposeful performance tasks. myPerspectives encourages social collaboration as well as student ownership of learning through goal setting, choice, and reflection.
