Board of Education Announces New Superintendent of Schools
At the April 10 Board of Education (BOE) meeting Heather Bohaty, current Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Derby Public Schools, was announced by the BOE as the next Superintendent of Schools with a 7-0 vote. She will begin this role on July 1 following Craig Wilford’s retirement. The Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) assisted our district in gathering public input. KASB conducted a series of characteristics focus group sessions with the community, students, teachers, classified staff and administration to obtain input on what others viewed as desirable traits of the new Superintendent of Schools. From this feedback, our Board of Education made the decision to interview internal candidates.

Martha Lawson, Food Service Supervisor, will participate in the Derby Recreation Commission’s In Sickness and In Health Speaker Series by providing community presentations called, School Lunch, The Whole Story. These free presentations will discuss the history of the school lunch program, federal and state regulations, the importance of providing healthy foods in school and explain what has to be considered when planning the breakfast and lunch menu.

Derby Public Schools Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Craig Wilford, has announced his plans for retirement effective June 30th, 2017. Wilford is currently serving his 40th year in public education and his 26th with Derby Public Schools. During Wilford’s time in Derby, he has served as Assistant Principal at Derby Middle School, the Sixth Grade Center Principal, Director of Community and Student Services, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and currently in 11th year as Superintendent of Schools.

Community and staff input meetings to discuss the Facilities Master Plan proposal during the months of January and February, along with an online feedback form, provided valuable feedback on the Facilities Master Plan proposal. The PFS committee reconvened on February 9 to begin carefully reviewing all feedback and to establish the next steps in both short-term and long-term facilities planning within our district. The PFS has asked that sub-committees reconvene to determine if there are additional options and do further research to ensure a Facilities Master Plan proposal is developed that reflects community needs while being a good steward of taxpayer’s dollars.

If your student's account balance falls below $5, you will still be notified via Skylert if you are signed up for Food Service messages. In May 2016 Derby Public Schools Board of Education complied with the guidance letter issued by the Department of Education and Department of Justice in relation to transgender students, which allowed students to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. This guidance was followed until a new letter was issued on February 22, 2017 by the Department of Education and Department of Justice, which rescinded the previous guidance letter. Based on the new guidance letter, the Board of Education voted 5-2 on Monday, February 27 to return to the process used prior to the May 2016 guidance letter.

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about keeping children eating healthy while school is out. Derby Public Schools is providing FREE meals to children during the summer. This summer, meals will be served in the cafeteria at Derby Middle School, 801 E. Madison, June 5-July 28, Monday-Friday from 11:00AM-1:00PM. No meals will be served July 3-4. There are no income requirements, address stipulations or registration. Any child age 1-18 may come to eat.
