Impact of School Funding Legislation
Derby Public Schools would like to inform you of discussion happening related to legislative action and court rulings that could directly impact summer programs within our district. When the Kansas State Supreme Court (KSSC) directed the state legislature to develop a new school finance program that provides adequate funding, they set a June 30, 2017 deadline. As of June 15, 2017, there has been a new formula approved by both the full House and Senate that is now awaiting Governor Sam Brownback’s signature. If signed, the bill will then be reviewed by the KSSC. If the KSSC does not approve this formula, the June 30 deadline could result in action being taken by the courts. This action could mean a K-12 public school shutdown starting July 1, 2017 in the state of Kansas. This would affect not only the normal school year but also all of the summer programs offered by the school district, including Latchkey, Primetime, Extended School Year, the Summer Meal Program and any other programs related to students/patrons in our buildings or other facilities.

Process for Success/Facilities Master Plan Update
As Derby Public Schools continues to move forward with a Facilities Master Plan proposal, it is imperative that we have feedback from the community. Due to low attendance and feedback received at recent community meetings the district has contracted with Patron Insight, a service that helps gather community input. Patron Insight will formulate questions and make 400 phone calls at random to community members to gain insight into the Facilities Master Plan and possible bond proposal. They will also provide an online survey to gather even more input from a wider audience. We will provide more information on the phone and online surveys once we have specific dates from Patron Insight.
