Carlson is currently the district’s Public Information Assistant and will transition into this new role on July 1. The job was posted on April 4 until May 4 with interviews taking place May 18-19, and May 25.

The new position falls in line with the district’s Strategic Plan for 2017-2022 that is designed to be a roadmap for the next five years. The plan articulates a common foundation of expectations and goals in place to prepare our students and staff for success. The plan’s first strategy is communication with a goal of improving internal and external communication to ensure students, staff, parents, and community are aware of current district initiatives, programs, and opportunities that support student personal growth and academic achievement. One of the first tasks of the new communication director will be to execute a communication audit in order to develop a five-year communication plan for the district.“The board is strongly aligned with these goals, strategies and beliefs and fully support the creation of the new Director of Communications position in order to help the district achieve our goals,” Matt Hoag, BOE President, said.

Since 2014, Carlson has worked as the Public Information Assistant where she has designed, coordinated and created the content for district communication pieces including a weekly staff newsletter, Derby School News, social media outlets, and special events, along with serving as a primary website administrator for the district website and secondary website administrator for school building websites. Carlson also worked along side a team of individuals to re-design the district’s website that launched July 1, 2016. The website was recognized by Advancing K12 EdTech on their list of 10 School District Websites to Learn From earlier this year and also received a Certificate of Excellence, the highest award possible, in the 2016 KASB/KanSPRA Publications Contest.

Carlson graduated from Wichita State University in 2008 with her Bachelors of Art in Integrated Marketing Communications. She received an Associates of Arts with emphasis in Communications from Butler Community College in 2007 and is also a Derby High School graduate from the class of 2005. Other previous experience includes working as a Communications Specialist for the Kansas Humane Society, with a highlight of contributing materials to help raise funds and gain public knowledge in opening the Murfin Animal Care Campus alongside the Wichita Animal Shelter, a public/private partnership in 2009.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve in a role that has full and undivided attention on improving internal and external communication at Derby Public Schools,” Carlson said. “Derby is a community I grew up in and a community I raise my family in. I look forward to serving our school district in this capacity.”
