Tentative Timeline

It is important to know this is a tentative timeline. Our goal is for the community to be engaged and informed as we move ahead with the bond projects. Projects related to safety and security are a top priority. Some of the first projects for the 2018-2019 school year include:

Intruder Locks
The district will be working closely with law enforcement, local fire department and our Operations Department to determine the best intruder locks to install. Once this is decided, the locks will be installed on all doors that do not currently have them and will not be affected by future bond construction. The plan at this time is to have these in place by the end of the summer and ready for the 2018-2019 school year.

FEMA-rated Shelter Plans
Planning and starting construction on shelter projects is a high priority for Derby Public Schools. We will have future updates on other facilities as plans are developed. These are the tentative plans for two of our facilities that are receiving FEMA-rated shelters.

Park Hill Elementary: This shelter facility will take approximately eight months to complete from the start of construction.
Wineteer Elementary: Due to classroom space that will be incorporated into the new shelter space at Wineteer, this facility will require additional planning and a slightly extended construction time. The build time will be approximately 12 months from the start of construction.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessible Playground Equipment
Through bond question 1, all elementary schools will have ADA accessible playground equipment. Park Hill and Wineteer Elementary will receive equipment and surfacing. These schools are being addressed first because their current playground space will not be affected by future bond building construction. Swaney Elementary, which already has an ADA compliant playground, will receive new surfacing.

Secured Access Vestibule at Derby High School
Derby High School does not currently have a secured entrance. The school will receive a secured access vestibule addition and re-work of the main office space.

Domestic Water Lines and Ramp Addition at Swaney Elementary
Through this bond, Swaney will receive a replacement of their domestic water lines. A ramp will be added to a wing of the building to provide additional ADA accessibility.

Bleachers at Derby High School
Derby High School will receive new gym bleachers. We will also start discussions and planning regarding Cooper, Oaklawn and the new elementary school configurations.

The following is a broad, tentative timeline:
Enrollment Study: This will go to the March 12 Board of Education meeting for discussion. Pending Board approval, the enrollment study will assist our district with knowledge on how projected enrollment impacts capacity at each of our facilities.
Construction Manager At Risk: This will go to an upcoming Board of Education meeting for discussion and action.
Contracts for George K. Baum & Company and SJCF Architecture: This will go as a consent item to an upcoming Board of Education meeting for approval.
Boundary Study Committee: Prior to the 2018-2019 school year, the district will be asking the Board of Education to consider a boundary study. The tentative plan is to form a committee to discuss, provide input and help establish new boundaries for the school district for both the elementary and secondary level. The committee will conduct this study during the 2018-2019 school year.
Communication of New Boundaries: The boundary change information will be communicated with families during the 2019-2020 school year. The tentative plan, pending future Board of Education approval, is that the boundary changes would start for the 2020-2021 school year.
Pleasantview Elementary Closure: This would take place after the 2019-2020 school year.
New Elementary to Open: This is planned to occur August 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year.
