Since implementing a district-wide wellness policy, Derby Public Schools have made many healthful changes for our students. Some successes to date include:
· Second graders throughout the district have enjoyed a program called The “Unsinkables.” Learning to stay active and healthy, these young students are provided swim lessons and nutrition education in a fun setting.
· To help educate families on healthy alternatives, schools throughout the district are holding building-wide health fairs and staff wellness programs.
· From the website and school newsletters to posters and brochures, information regarding nutrition, physical fitness and tobacco cessation is being shared throughout the school year.
· Using the nutritional guidelines, positive changes have been made to the foods offered in school meals as well as the foods available to students throughout the school day.
· We have created presentations for families to learn more about nutrition, stress, physical education and our community recreation opportunities.

What is the Process for Success? The Master Plan is the long-range “map” designed to guide the district into the future. A critical element in that plan is the Process for Success, which includes The Citizen’s Steering Committee and six sub-committees. The Process for Success is an excellent opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of children. This committee will identify goals and objectives for the district, analyze facility conditions, determine needs, develop solutions and cost estimates, identify funding and build consensus on the overall plan. Whether you would choose to be on the Steering Committee or one of six sub-committees, opportunities to make a difference are available. Click the “Committee Opportunities” button above to learn more about each committee and how you can get involved today! Please be sure to turn in your application no later than February 22nd in order to be considered. You can also find the “Volunteer Application” by clicking the “Committee Opportunities” button.
High School Alumni Directory Underway
In an effort to better connect with Derby Public Schools alumni, our high school has contracted with Harris Connect to create an alumni directory. This national publisher will be beginning efforts soon. Should you, friends or family receive a postcard or phone call from Harris Connect, please note that this is a legitimate project. Participation, however, is completely voluntary and at the discretion of alumni as to their inclusion in or purchase of the publication.
Grassroots Effort
The district has been talking about budgets publicly for some time now. Superintendent, Craig Wilford, has gone to Topeka, along with district directors, Board of Education members, one of our principals, and even a student, to clearly state the severity these cuts would represent to our district. One state senator asked for clarification saying, “Some people say there is still fat to cut. Are you saying we are now down to bone and muscle or do we have more fat to trim?”
The superintendents told him we are truly down to bone and muscle, which you will see represented in these suggested budget cuts. KASB (the Kansas Association of School Boards) is recommending we be prepared for anywhere from $286-$600 per pupil reductions, which equates to an additional $2.2 to $5 million in cuts if the Kansas State Legislature does not make changes to the current budget proposal.
Since we do not know what the future holds, legislators need to know how important public education is to each of us. To do this in a unified manner, we have prepared a “Grassroots Effort” that includes background, contacts, and details regarding the budget crisis. If you are concerned and want to take action, click below.

Pandemic Response Plan
Derby Public Schools is committed to the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on its campus. In order to support that commitment, a Pandemic Response Plan has been developed to assist Derby Schools in protecting its students and staff during an emergency situation.
The Pandemic Response Plan for Derby Public Schools provides guidance to our district regarding detection, response and recovery from an influenza pandemic. The Plan describes the unique challenges posed by a pandemic that may require specific leadership decisions, response actions, and communications methods.
