High School Alumni Directory Underway
In an effort to better connect with Derby Public Schools alumni, our high school has contracted with Harris Connect to create an alumni directory. This national publisher will be beginning efforts soon. Should you, friends or family receive a postcard or phone call from Harris Connect, please note that this is a legitimate project. Participation, however, is completely voluntary and at the discretion of alumni as to their inclusion in or purchase of the publication.
Grassroots Effort
The district has been talking about budgets publicly for some time now. Superintendent, Craig Wilford, has gone to Topeka, along with district directors, Board of Education members, one of our principals, and even a student, to clearly state the severity these cuts would represent to our district. One state senator asked for clarification saying, “Some people say there is still fat to cut. Are you saying we are now down to bone and muscle or do we have more fat to trim?”
The superintendents told him we are truly down to bone and muscle, which you will see represented in these suggested budget cuts. KASB (the Kansas Association of School Boards) is recommending we be prepared for anywhere from $286-$600 per pupil reductions, which equates to an additional $2.2 to $5 million in cuts if the Kansas State Legislature does not make changes to the current budget proposal.
Since we do not know what the future holds, legislators need to know how important public education is to each of us. To do this in a unified manner, we have prepared a “Grassroots Effort” that includes background, contacts, and details regarding the budget crisis. If you are concerned and want to take action, click below.
